Australia Council for the Arts Opens Grants Application for Music Writers and Journalists
The Australia Council for the Arts has opened the application for grants to music writers and journalists who wish to travel to events abroad and write about Australian artists performing there.
The country’s key arts funding and advisory body said that for this year it is offering four Music Writers’ Travel Bursaries worth $3,000 each to eligible writers to cover their travel costs in attending international music showcase events. Priority, however, will be given to events lined up to be supported by Sounds Australia in 2023 and those with confirmed media content.
In coming up with the assistance initiative, the arts council said it recognizes the importance of supporting the push of local music writers and journalists to be present in international events to create more content about Australian music for the global market to appreciate and chew on.
“There is considerable scope to open up new opportunities and markets for Australian music globally, particularly as the world opens up post-COVID,” said Australia Councils’ head of music Kirsty Rivers.
The council official added, “This project is part of a suite of projects supporting the visibility and discoverability of Australian music by investing in quality critical discourse and music journalism, such as Music Writers’ Lab – Bigsound, Music Writers’ Lab – Womadelaide and Wikimedia – The Australian Music Project.”
Rivers further said that through the new $3,000 travel grants, they hope to do their part in advancing the careers of local music writers while also encouraging the creation of more quality content about Australia for the global stage.
Under stipulated guidelines by the organizers of the initiative, travel must be completed in 2023, with the other costs, including insurance, visas and travel costs, to be shouldered by the recipient.
The deadline for the submission of application is set for April 17, 2023. The recipients will be informed once the assessment is completed.
Applicants must be over 18 years old at the time of submission and they should have a valid passport to travel. Only one recipient per organization is allowed to apply for the grant.
