The Instagram First Nations Creators Program is back for a third year and is now open for application.
Screen Australia’s First Nations Department and Meta Australia announced the return of the immersive program, which is geared towards fast-tracking the careers of promising Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander creators and deepening their voices through opportunities available in social media and digital content creation.

Program proponents said up to 15 emerging digital creators are eligible to receive funding and in-person training this year. Activities will be conducted at the Sydney headquarters of Instagram.
To be able to participate in this year’s iteration of the program, creators must be over 18 years old and identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander. They must have an Instagram account and have experience in social media or digital video content creation as well as be available to attend the program in October.
They, too, must submit a short one-minute video about themselves, which must include their social accounts and the type of content they create.
Screen Australia welcomes the return of the program as it is part of its thrust to build equitable platforms for the community.
“The Instagram First Nations Creators Program has been a pivotal platform for elevating and celebrating the rich diversity of First Nations voices in the digital landscape. This program empowers emerging First Nations talent, providing them with the necessary skills, mentorship, and resources to create impactful content that resonates with their communities and the world at large,” said Angela Bates, Screen Australia’s head of First Nations.
Attesting to the significant impact the First Nations Creators Program has had for creators is Bundjalung country filmmaker Jahvis Loveday, who said,
“The Screen Australia and Meta First Nations program was one of the best things I have done for my creative growth… Overall It was powerful to create alongside other First Nations creators, and to watch each other now grow, is so uplifting.”
For Meta Australia, its continued partnership with Screen Australia is a testament to how productive it has been for the two organisations and it is looking forward to creating more impactful opportunities moving forward.
“We look forward to providing an impactful opportunity for the 2023 cohort through a range of funding, education and mentoring sessions,” said Kirsty Wilson, Meta’s ANZ Creator Partnership Lead.
Application for the 2023 Instagram First Nations Creators Program closes on August 10.
